The newWORKS project
Introduced last year, PlayPen is a play reading series curated by two local playwrights
and supported by TheaterWorks creative team. A weekend long series of four to six
staged play readings of new works from nationally known and local playwrights.
Opening Night Parties
For each production, TheaterWorks hosts a party with the cast in our lobby after the
production. This is fully catered affair with an open bar for some 200 guests. The guest
list includes TheaterWorks major donors, as well as family and friends. The party
underwriter would have the opportunity to invite there colleagues and clients to the
performance and party.
Pay What You Can Performances
TheaterWorks offer two Pay What You Can performances for each production
throughout the year. For 12 performances a year, patrons tell the box office what they
can afford to pay for a ticket. Tickets have purchased for as little as a dollar.
Throughout the year, TheaterWorks hosts a number of events targeted at expanding
our audience and engaging the greater Hartford community. Events include The Living
Room Concert Series, which features a different local musician performing in a “living
room” setting at TheaterWorks. “FUN” Nights that are quarterly events whereby 3
prominent community leaders tell a story of failure and how it helped to further their
careers in a comfortable setting at TheaterWorks. There is a cash bar and opportunities
for meeting and mingling at the beginning of the event and in between speakers. We
also host family friendly event throughout the year, including District Nights, which are
an outdoor block party in the parking lot across from the theater with local musicians,
crafters and visual artists accompanied by food and drink for sale. Upcoming we are
planning Gingerbread House making in conjunction with our annual holiday show, Kite
Flying in Bushnell Park behind the theater in the spring, and a Carnival in the park in
conjunction with the production of Fun Home next summer.
